So, it's Sunday evening as I write this post and it's been a crazy busy week!
Because I've literally not stopped all week, I've not had a lot of time to put together a post. So, instead of trying to rush the post I had planned on writing (the result being a hastily written, ill-prepared post), I thought that I would instead do a brief round-up of the year so far and introduce a couple of exciting new features that I hope to be starting very soon.
Round-up of the Year So Far
Photographing in Challenging Conditions
2018 has been quite a busy year for me so far.
In terms of my photography, I've managed to get out and shoot most weeks - which has been a challenge at times, partly because of the weather.
It has been an unusually long winter this year; with snow, ice, lots of wind and a deluge of rain and, although poor conditions often lead to the most interesting photographs, I have to admit to struggling a bit this year. A lack of sunlight, cold and mostly wet conditions and lots of grey days have, at times, left me a little un-motivated.
I wrote a post earlier in the year on how I overcame this spell of creative block which you can read here.
But, that being said, I have managed to get some really lovely shots this winter which always helps to motivate me to get out and try to capture more!
Starting a Vlog
By far the biggest thing I've done this year has been to start my own vlog.
I've wanted to vlog for a long time, but have always felt apprehensive about starting. I tend to prefer being behind the camera than in front of it and wasn't sure how I'd feel about filming myself and then watching it back numerous times as I edit it.
It turns out that I am really enjoying the film-making process and have thoroughly enjoyed making my first 2 vlogs.
You can visit my YouTube channel and watch my vlogs here (and I can promise you that there will be more to come).
It's taken a while, but I have now got into the routine of posting a blog article once per week. I am making time each week to prperly research articles and am really enjoying putting together posts and articles for the blog.......plenty more to come on this below!
I started an Instagram page this year (I know that I'm late to the party - but better late than never)!
I'm also in the process of setting up a Facebook Page and am making a concerted effort to post more regularly on Twitter.
So, although I have been a bit absent from Social Media until now, I will be far more active in the coming months - so expect to see more of me on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter over the next few months!
This year has gotten off to a great start and I am enjoying growing my blog, social media presence and YouTube channel. I've still got a long way to go, but I'm in this for the long haul - I like to think of my photography as a marathon rather than a sprint.
I'm still loving landscape photography and have enjoyed overcoming the many challenges this winter has thrown at me - and now that Winters out of the way, bring on the Spring!!
So, Whats Next?
I have a few exciting projects lined up over the next few months that I can't wait to get stuck into!
Skills and Learning Area
Since I first decided to start blogging, I've had the idea of starting a Skills and Learning area.
I would like to add some real value to my blog, for both beginner photographers and those with more experience.
For that Reason, I would like to begin a series of posts aimed at the beginner or fairly inexperienced photographer. These posts will all be landscape photography themed and will cover areas such as: composition, lighting, camera settings and editing.
For the more experienced photographers, who maybe don't need basic level skills (although I often find that re-visiting the basics can remind me of things I've sometimes not tried in a while, or completely forgotten about), I will be doing location and route guides to some of my favourite locations (see below).
Location and Route Guides
I have dabbled with route guides already here, but I would like to make more of this by describing, in detail, some of the routes that I've explored. I will be adding map and GPX information to these guides, alongside route descriptions and location advice.
Because these will take quite a while to put together, I envisage only doing one every month or two - but they should really help anyone visiting the area for the first time, to go for a hike and find some great shots.
Developing the Vlog
Alongside these changes to the blog, I would like to continue developing my YouTube channel and vlogs.
I am still very new when it comes to YouTube and very much in the process of learning the skills I need to vlog, so please forgive the slightly "rough around the edges" video's.
I am hoping to continue to improve my film-making and presentation skills over the coming months, so stay tuned and join me as I develop my vlogs
I've wanted to start a photography project for a quite some time and I've got a few ideas in development at the moment. I hope to begin my first project at some point later in the year.
I will obviously blog and film my project as it un-furls, so stay tuned for updates!
I am currently putting together some ideas that I could use to create an ebook. I envisage the ebook being on some aspect of landscape photography; such as Composition in the Landscape, Using Light Creatively in the Landscape or something similar.
This is still very much in the early development stages, but I hope to start writing it within the next few months. I'll keep you all posted on how I'm getting on!
And Finally - I'd Like Your Suggestions
If there is anything that you would like to see in this blog or on my YouTube channel, or if there is a particular subject or skill you'd like me to go over, please comment below and I'll see what I can do.
