New Year, New Challenge - Introducing the Monthly Instagram Challenge

January’s Monthly Instagram Challenge is: Leaves

(see lower down for more details)

Happy New Year everyone!

So 2018 was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I had some amazing experiences – Wild camping alone on Haystacks was one of the many highs of 2018!

However with my fractured foot, which all but stopped my photography for several months in the summer, 2018 had some real low points in it as well.

I am a strong believer in balance (in that we can’t really enjoy the highs without experiencing the lows as well) and 2018 really did give me an abundance of both!

But as 2018 has now come to a close and 2019 has begun with the usual mix of diet and holiday getaway ads on TV, the promise of “bad” (but good for photographers) weather for the next few months and short days and long nights, this time of year is a wonderful opportunity to take stock, reflect on the year that’s been and look ahead to the next 12 months.

So, what’s on my agenda for 2019?

Firstly, there will be some changes to the blog which will hopefully come to fruition over the next few months. I will be posting more regularly as I want to grow this blog in 2019 from being something that I occasionally dip in and out of, to being something I regularly post to and to become a valuable resource for anyone looking to improve their landscape photography.

Secondly, I am starting a one year personal photography project should keep my very busy through the year to December 2019. I’m really excited about this project as I have thought about completing a large project for quite sometime and have been planning this one since early October 2018. I’ll be posting a dedicated article about my personal photography project in a few days time.

And Thirdly, I am starting a few new segments on the blog, one of which I am introducing today – a Monthly Instagram Challenge.

Monthly Instagram Challenge – The Rules

The rules are fairly straight forward:

  • On the first Monday of each month, I will post a word, title or theme here on the blog and on my Instagram Story.

  • Anyone can take part in the challenge and you don’t need a “good” camera - a smartphone will be fine!

  • Anyone taking part will have until the first Monday of the following month to post one image of that subject to Instagram.

  • Use the hashtag: #smillsphoto when you upload your image so we can all see the images.

I will leave a comment on each image, but please do comment on each other’s images as well and remember to keep it nice!

***Please note that this isn’t a competition and there are no prizes! I have created this challenge to help generate ideas, challenge our creativity and inspire people to get outside and photograph as much as possible.

If you have any ideas for titles or themes you would like me to put up, please comment below.

January’s Monthly Instagram Challenge is: Leaves

Examples could be leaves on a tree, on the ground, in water, by water, through ice, in the snow, macro, or whatever you like. Be as creative as you want to be and try to think outside of the box. I have uploaded an image and hashtagged it #smillsphoto to help get things started. So please join me in photographing Leaves this January

I look forward to seeing what you all come-up with!
